As the workload of the department increased it was necessary to expand the radiotherapy department at the RUH. A new bunker was built and the BCUSG raised £1m to purchase a state of the art linear accelerator to install in it in 1999. This linear accelerator could deliver megavoltage x-ray treatments and also electron treatments. It was computer controlled and had its own built-in imaging system. This unit was operational until 2011.
