How the quizzes evolved over the 10 years

I speak of a stalwart of the Trowbridge Fund Raising branch of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, namely Robin Dallimore. Robin joined the Trowbridge branch in 1988, the year of its formation and has served on its committee ever since and now at 70 years of age and because of health and personal problems he has now decided to step back from his committee role.

Robin is a Painter and Decorator by trade and still likes to keep his hand in. He has three siblings, two brothers and a sister (now deceased) and got married to June in 1982. June also served on the committee in various roles, only stepping back from these in recent years. Now divorced after 25 years, both “still keep a watchful, caring eye out for each other.” He played cricket for Winsley and was also at one time Chair of the Freemasons, Worshipful Master of Clarendon Lodge.

Robin fulfilled many requests made of him by the Support Group and still hopes to carry out some of these in the years ahead. One of those roles was “scrounging” or should I say, “procuring” raffle prizes, for many of the fund raising raffles he presided over. He has organised other events, such as a “Howzat Sports Appeal”, which featured Steve Davis and Jimmy White. He also has a reputation for having “green fingers” and produced a substantial number of plants annually and has every year, together with others of his “ilk” on the committee boosted Support group funds tremendously via plant sales

He has also been for the last 10 years the mainstay of a popular fund raising 100 question quiz, which carried prizes of £50, £25 & £10.

Robin whose idea it was, has compiled and researched the questions, numbered and collated quiz books that over the years have seen in excess of 6000 published annually.

Robin our “one horned reindeer” selling his quizzes at Frome Cheese & Grain and a selection of some of his plants.

These have been distributed via various outlets throughout the Royal United Hospital catchment area and here he has been ably assisted by other committee members covering an area ranging from Shepton Mallet, Paulton, Warminster and also covering Devizes, Calne and Malmesbury etc. Robin to promote sales has personally spent 18/21 days annually at various outlets such as the R.U.H in Bath, Castle Place in Trowbridge etc. Completed entries for the quizzes have been received from all over the U.K. as well as Europe such as France and Spain. These submitted entries have over the years been independently adjudicated by Jane Brotherton of Hilperton, a retired school teacher and former cancer patient, who, like Robin has enjoyed the pressure. All this of course has been quite time consuming and a lot of hard work but has been of great benefit to the Support Group funds which has seen almost £30k raised from its sales during this period and for this we owe him a big vote of thanks. Robin intends now to slow down, but will “procure” and “till” for as long as he is able.

Robin – semi retired!!

Thank you Robin – “proper job”
