Trowbridge Report

Posted on Jun 24, 2012

It’s been a busy 6 months for Trowbridge Committee members and of course our wonderful Supporters without whom we would not raise as much money as we do. So I will start my Report by saying how much they are appreciated and offering them a huge ‘Thank You’

Store collections are a fantastic source of income and this year so far the total raised is £3,221.70. In April the amount collected at TESCO was £1,104.96 followed by £748.88 at MORRISONS in Warminster. A very good month! In June we were at MORRISONS in Westbury and added £517.18 to funds. We then moved to Melksham in July for a 2 day collection at SAINSBURY which due to an unfortunate double booking turned into one day, however we did collect £423.69. Finally in October we were back at MORRISONS in Warminster to collect a further £426.99. With another collection in the The Shires in Trowbridge in December we raised another £801.09 reaching a total  of over £4,000 which is well worth the hours put in by everyone. PLEASE think about supporting us by coming along and helping with the collections. Just one hour would be very much appreciated and it really is rewarding. Phone Sue on 01225 755189

Once again the green fingers of Tino, Robin and Ralph meant we had a wonderful array of plants, baskets and pots on show at the Lion’s May Fayre in Trowbridge raising £429.26 with another £107.37 at the Bradford on Avon Lion’s Fayre the following weekend. Tino then set up his stands at home and marketed more baskets and pots which added a remarkable £843.95. The BCUSG plant stall is now famous and folk come from a wide area to take advantage of the reasonable prices.

For a second year BCUSG had a stand at the Frome Cheese Show and for a second year it was windy but this did not deter David ,Reg and Robin who manfully braved the weather and sold tombola tickets to the value of £360.70. Well done to the three musketeers!!!

Other friends have also been busy on our behalf. Barbara and Ken Pickard held a Strawberry Tea (delicious) and sent us a cheque for £129 and Trowbridge Lion’s sent £600 from their annual 10k Run. Saltford Village Hall Committee organised a Concert in memory of Fred Wedlock. A full house enjoyed a wonderful evening of music and fun alongside Fred’s family. This tribute to such a lovely man raised £720.54. Fred performed on many occasions at The Lamb in Trowbridge and they sent us £114 raised at a recent ‘Open Mic’ night. Sincere thanks to all those involved.

The forecast was not good for the evening of our International Night in July so contingency plans came into play and we simply moved into St John’s Parish Centre Hall. It was a bit of a tight squeeze fitting in twelve tables laden with food and wine plus musicians and a large raffle but somehow the ‘team’ managed it and over a hundred guests somehow managed to balance plates and glasses without any accidents whilst squeezing between each other. Despite this the feedback was excellent and we raised £1,123.64. Thank you one & all and roll on 2012.

Donations come in various amounts big and small but each and every one is appreciated like The £1 bag of pennies from Mrs Smith a resident at Abbeyfield and the monthly £2 Bank Credit from Mrs Hancock. Gary & Peter Mould sent £166.40 and Mary Mitchell sent £167 collected in lieu of birthday presents. Lion Ladies held a raffle and we received a cheque for £150 whilst the family of Mrs Woziak sent £200 in her memory. The Randall family had yet another celebration (I’ve lost count how many they’ve had over the years) They celebrated 40 years married and collected £296.55 at the party. We also received a cheque for £62.20 from the Lodge of Concord raffle. Marie Brichard-Parsons wanted to help BCUSG so decided to run the Chippenham Half Marathon (her first) So far we have received £547.40 in Sponsorship. Well done Marie and I believe you’re already training for next year. Thank you all for remembering BCUSG.

I’ve said it many times pennies really do make pounds as I’m reminded every time I open a collecting box. Sharon Bullus regularly returns the box she displays in her mobile snack bar containing around £50 with the most recent one £58.81. Another from Brewers DIY Shop £30.07 and £13.56 fell out of Roger Randall’s box plus £12.33 from Avon Spice. Three boxes have come from The Griffin in Frome in recent months totalling £555.89 mostly coming in from their weekly Quiz Night (The winners being ‘coaxed’ into making donations!!) To all who donate thank you so much. We could of course raise lots more if we had more outlets for boxes so call Jeanne now on 01225 769136 if you can help.

Earlier in the year Denis Overton approached the Committee wanting to raise money for BCU where his wife has received treatment. He proposed organising a ‘Big Band Concert’ to be held at the Frome Memorial Hall. To raise a substantial amount of money we needed to sell over 500 tickets – a daunting prospect we thought but Denis was confident it could be achieved and the ball started
rolling. He was right of course and on 29th October an almost capacity audience enjoyed an evening of jazz nostalgia from the Mike Smith Big Band & Singers. We have just received a cheque from Denis for £1,968.50 so adding on the £253.70 from the Retiring Bucket Collection it was a very successful event. A huge thank you and best wishes to Denis and his wife.

Finally Pearson May Chartered Accountants who have given their support to BCUSG for many years. Not only do we continue to benefit from their annual Golf Day at Cumberwell Park but also from the Directors themselves. This year we received cheques to the value of £1,144.24. What more to say but Thank You.

Well that’s put our last few months into a nutshell as we gear up for 2012.
