Trowbridge Report

Posted on Oct 28, 2012

Another half year another Report on the activities of Trowbridge Committee. Where does the time go?

I suppose the most satisfying thing to report was handing over a cheque for £20,000 at the Presentation Evening in May which considering the current economic climate is a tribute not just to Trowbridge committee members but to all our supporters. So a great big thank you to everyone.

First of all thank you to all the family and friends of Carol Freeston who sent us £1,945 in her memory.

Donations have come from others like Marilyn Marshall who sent £50 and Kim Single-Bloom who sent £20. Mrs Hancock sends £2 every month by direct credit. Fran & Matt Andrews ran in the Bristol 10k and sent us £147 and Trowbridge Lions sent £150 from the proceeds of their 10K Run when Committee members acted as marshalls. The D S Band play each month at The Farmhouse in Southwick and they presented us with a cheque for £395.50 from their December Raffle. It was a good evening enjoyed by Committee and partners Thank you all for supporting BCUSG.

We really wish we had more sites for our collecting boxes as so far this year they have produced a total of £505.95: £74.68 from Sharon Bullus; £26.11 from Roger Randall; £23.37 from Trowbridge Conservative Club and 3 boxes from The Griffin Pub in Frome raised £343.44. The box from The Kings Arms, Trowbridge had £38.35 in it. Thanks to all who contributed. Please call if you would like to help by displaying a BCUSG box or we also have buckets for collecting/display at any of your social events.

In May Committee members and helpers collected £428.74 and ££423.66 in Castle Precinct and the town centre respectively. As always I’m appealing for anyone who can spare an hour to help us – we really do need your help.

Committee member Jeff Law suggested a ‘Bingo Night. We agreed with some apprehension as none of us had any experience of such an event but thanks to the staff at Wesley Road Club it proved to be a big success and we raised £559.

Pat Smith, a long time supporter of BCUSG, organised a Sunday afternoon Cream Tea and table sale at Frome Village Hall and sent us a cheque for the fantastic sum of £630. Thank you Pat and your gang of friendly helpers. The cream tea was delicious.

Trowbridge Labour Club held a ‘Beer Festival’ and Trowbridge Committee members went along to sell raffle tickets together with Trowbridge Lions and we both received £201.77. The men said the beers were good but I can’t confirm that!! But maybe next year as they have promised to do it again.

As usual we had our plant stall at the Trowbridge Lions Fayre in May. It was a cold wet and breezy day just like the rest of the ‘Summer’ and like even the professional growers this year Tino, Robin & Ralph’s plants were all late but they still managed to fill the tables. Although down on previous years we took £391 so well done to the three ‘Garden Gnomes’. Since then ‘Gnome Tino’ has been selling the plants and baskets etc from his driveway and raised a further £754. You can all take a rest now.

New recruit to Trowbridge Committee Jan Taylor-Lambert has also been out and about selling plants during the ‘Summer’. At Corsham Jubilee Fete she made a profit of £158 with £137 at Chippenham Vehicle Show and the profit from Devizes Garden Festival was £135 then £82 from Holt Festival of Music. She also arranged a two day Collection at Whitehall Garden Centre and with the help of Committee raised £170. Thank you Jan for all your efforts.

We have held two major events so far this year. The first was a sell out dinner at Bruschetta Italian Restaurant with entertainment from Trowbridge Operatic plus the unofficial ‘singing waiters’. The food was wonderful and we had some great raffle prizes which helped us raise £613 on the night. This included a very generous donation of £100 and subsequent to the dinner we received a further donation of £2,000 for which we are extremely grateful. A very rewarding evening for BCUSG.

This year the Trowbridge committee invited our wonderful band of supporters to join us for a New Year dinner, an opportunity to thank them all for always being there when needed. The photos below are of Richard Randall choosing a lucky raffle ticket & Tino Polledri our Chairman thanking our guests.

Our most recent event has been our annual July International Night when ten tables offered food and drink from various countries around the world. A bit damp (surprise, surprise) so once again we had to move indoors but it did not deter the 90 guests from enjoying the evening. Frank & Al provided appropriate musical entertainment in the background and Committee member David Birch conducted the raffle and the auction with the normal amount of attractive assistance from Marie, Maureen and yours truly. Proceeds from the evening have added around £1,100 to our bank balance. Thank you to everyone who helped or supported in any way. Our Chairman Tino Polledri reminded me to express special thanks to Stallards pub for supplying us not only with the beer but also with staff to serve it. (I noticed he was stood alongside ‘working’ all evening!!)

Finally, Committee member Robin Dallimore has once again raised a wonderful amount of money from his annual Quiz. This year the figure is £4,208.27 which is due to all the many hours he has spent selling, delivering and collecting thousands of copies. In fact, this was the 10th year of his Quiz and reluctantly he felt it was time to bring it to an end and because of a decline in health also felt it was time to retire from Trowbridge Committee. He has been a dedicated worker on behalf of BCUSG for almost 25 years and he will be sadly missed. Our sincere thanks and best wishes go to Robin.

Trowbridge Committee would love to hear from anybody willing to undertake running a similar Quiz and assure them of our full support.

Next year we celebrate 25 years in Trowbridge so a good time to consider joining us. Yes it’s hard work sometimes but we do have lots of fun and it’s oh so rewarding.
