Day Care Activity has increased threefold since 1998 and it is constantly changing as new and improved treatments are implemented. The existing facility had outgrown its current capacity, with Nursing Staff having limited control over daily attendance, because of the unpredictable workload dictated by patient requirements. Inevitably insufficient capacity meant a delay in accepting a patient, due to lack of space, which often resulted in an emergency admission. Patients requiring to lie down during treatment were either admitted as an in-patient or sat upright for long periods until such time as a trolley became available. We are doubly pleased to say that the first patients received their treatment, as predicted, in early June 2004. Already there has been very appreciative comments and feedback, not only from patients, but also their relatives and the nursing staff. Add to this the increase in space, which brings an increase in privacy for patients and their relatives/friends, the entire environment has been transformed. This accommodation and facility is expected to fulfill the growing requirement for Day Care at the R.U.H Oncology until the year 2008. We at the Bath Cancer Unit and its Support Group are most grateful to all our donors and supporters for their generous gifts, which has made this exciting addition to our resources happen in such a short time scale. The project was completed on time - to budget and most importantly, it has met patients and staff’s expectations. Thank you all for your support, long may it continue.
