SUN
BOOSTS TURNOUT AT FAMILY DAY
Sunny weather boosted a
pub's fun day on Saturday and helped raise hundreds of
pounds for charity. The Bear Pub in Bear Flat
attracted hundreds of people throughout the afternoon.
They tested their skills at the coconut shy, got
splashed in the dunking machine and watched their
balloons soar into the air to faraway destinations.
The event was organised by Kevin Knox, who runs the
pub with his wife, Carole, to raise money for the Bath
Cancer Unit Support Group.
"It has been excellent. We have raised just more
than £800," said Mr Knox.
"We have just had our first phone call about a
balloon which has come down in Devizes, and we only
released them an hour ago, so we are expecting great
things."
The pair have run similar events at their former pub
in Stratford-upon-Avon and were delighted with the
response from Bath residents.
"They have all joined in," Mr Knox said
afterwards.
"And many of them got a soaking in the dunking
machine, including me.
"It has been excellent - everyone has gone away
with something.
"They have all been fantastic."
The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group raises money to
improve the care and treatment facilities for patients
attending the cancer unit at the Royal United
Hospital.
Mr Knox said he chose the charity because cancer
affected so many people.
"Although cancer has not affected anyone close to
me, we have lost a lot of customers or seen the way
they have been hit by the disease," he said.
"Licensees know more than a lot of people about
how harsh it hits people and how many people are
affected by it."
