About Us

We are pleased to advise that you can now Donate to BCUSG Online - Please click here

The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group evolved from the Bath Cancer Unit First Appeal of the mid 1970's, when more than £1.25million was raised.

The Support Group replaced the Appeal in 1985 and became a registered charity, No. 292643 and to date have raised a further sum in excess of £2.5 million.

The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) was formed by local people, to raise funds to assist in the treatment of Cancer patients from the Royal United Hospital catchment area.

Patients attending The Cancer Unit mainly come from North & West Wiltshire, North Somerset and the City of Bath itself. Many also receive treatment from surrounding counties.

In fact of a catchment population of some 500,000 residents over 80% reside outside Bath.

BCUSG differs from other charities such as Cancer Research, Tenovus and Macmillan Cancer Relief etc, whose aims are pitched at a national level.

Please also note from our Expenditure Log, that all Committee members and fund raisers give of their own time and at their own expense. This means of course that all funding is ALL made available to the Cancer Unit and its patients.

Our History

Charles Thompson

We evolved in 1985 with our Chairman Charles Thompson MBE holding the reins until 1997 when he 'stepped down', handing over to his very able deputy, the Vice-Chairman, John Carter.

Charles worked on the original Bath Cancer Appeal and as matters progressed he became Chairman of the Trustees. It was because of his conviction that support for the Unit was 'out there', he was invited to chair its replacement, the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group.

His conviction has proved to be very correct, the support has continued and his vision has become a reality. Under his astute chairmanship, the Support Group have funded a number of major projects including the additional Linear Accelerator, which after extensive testing and calibrating, came on line Wednesday 09 August 2000.

Our Newspaper - SUPPORTLINE

SupportLIne is the official 'eye and ear' of the Support Group and originally entitled Newsletter. If you would like to be added to the distribution list please contact SupportLine's editor Jane Margetts at this e-mail address:- jane.margetts@bcusg.org

Our former Chairman Charles Thompson produced Issue No.1. on an Amstrad Word Processor. He pasted up his own laboriously typed text and then on a second hand photocopier, he ran off about 250 copies.

In 1995, Ed Diggens, Charles, Grandson in Law, brought great changes to the Newsletter. Using his computer skills and knowledge, Supportline sprung into life with its colour-separated artwork on disk, (i.e. a print master) the raw text of the Newsletter was transformed.

Ed also arranged and oversaw the printing, before delivering the finished article to the replacement editor, Mike Dymond. Ed, in 1998, due to a busy job and a young family felt that it was time to make way and handed these duties on to Tim Wright who volunteered to help and assist Mike in these key tasks.

We undoubtedly owe both Charles and Ed a huge thank you for their foresight and for all their efforts and hard work. From those early days of photocopying 250 copies, we now have print runs of 2500, ably printed by Ralph Allen Press, a Bath based company.

These were then collated by Mike and distributed free to our Supporters, friends and to different outlets throughout the Royal United Hospital catchment area. Due to Mike sadly losing his fight with cancer the mantle of Editor was then assumed by our current Editor Jane Margetts.

Editor: Jane

Jane has now taken over that role completely and she will be only to pleased to hear from you, should you have any snippets of information/photographs, or news of planned events that would be of interest to our readers.

It is published twice yearly and contains 6/8 pages of news, photographs of events and keeps everyone informed of expenditure and progress. With Tim Wright, our graphics artist unfortunately having to recently relocate to another part of the U.K., his role has now been assumed by the Ralph Allen Press.

This team saw the implementation and design of a new logo for the BCUSG and a change in the Supportline colour, (issue No.32), for which we are most grateful.

Our Editor Jane, would be doubly grateful if you were able to assist in the distribution of Supportline in your locality, just give her a call on 0781 378 6462 or e-mail jane.margetts@bcusg.org - she looks forward to hearing from you.
